To determine if you have a vessel or a category H fitting, for most provinces you must follow the flow charts from CSA B51 as shown below for the intended service of your product.  For TSSA (Ontario) see the section after the flow charts.

TSSA (Ontario) has released a code adoption document that states:

Section 1.4: …Items less than 6” in internal diameter or less than 1.5 cubic feet in internal volume are classified as Category “H” fittings not pressure vessels.

Always a Fitting:

The charts above only apply to Category H.  For Category A to G they are always considered fittings.  For example, a valve or flange is always a fitting, even if the volume and size from the charts above indicate it is a vessel.

From the flow charts above you can see that vessels require an inspection by an authorized inspector, where a fitting is inspected internally by the manufacture’s QC program. This allows the manufacturer to build as many as they want without having to repeatedly arrange for the authorized inspector to come by and approve everything.

Fitting registrations must be renewed every 10 years.  All calculations, drawings and supporting documents must be resubmitted to the jurisdictions.  A vessels registration never expires, but the design must be verified to the current Code edition when fabricated.
