What we do

Design across the pressure envelope.

A full discipline stack — from a single fitting to a complete multi-vessel skid — all delivered with the registrations your build actually needs.

Pressure Vessels

ASME Section VIII Div. 1 & 2 design, heat exchangers, FEA, and full fabrication drawing packages.

ASME · Section VIII

Process Piping

B31.1 / B31 layouts, stress analysis, and fabrication drawing ready for the shop floor.

ASME · B31.1 · B31.3 · B31.5

Boilers

Power, heating, and recovery boiler design under Section I and IV.

ASME · Section I/IV

Fittings

Flanges, couplings, tees or category H fittings, ready for CRN.

Category H

Custom Designs

From skid packages, one-off vessels or a single fitting — custom design from concept to stamp.

CUSTOM

THE PE DESIGN ADVANTAGE

One company.
Every province.

Canadian Registration Numbers are non-negotiable — and unforgiving. We navigate every jurisdictional quirk so there are no design delays holding up equipment shipping and start up.

  • Initial submissions, revalidations, and design revisions
  • Direct correspondence with provincial safety authorities
  • We handle the registration process so you don't have to

Anatomy of a CRN

Decode a Canadian Registration Number.

CRN stands for Canadian Registration Number — and the number itself tells you where the design was first registered and every other province that accepts it.

CRN number assigned by the initial province of registration.

.2Initial Province

First digit after the decimal is the initial province — here, 2 = Alberta.

CCanada-wide

The 'C' marks a Canada-wide registration, equivalent to .2134567890YTN.

Vessels vs Fittings

Vessels require an authorized inspector to sign off. Fittings are inspected internally under the manufacturer's QC program — so a fabricator can build as many as they need without arranging inspections every time.

Renewals

Fitting registrations must be renewed every 10 years — all calculations, drawings, and supporting documents resubmitted to the jurisdictions. Vessel registrations never expire, but the design must be verified to the current Code edition when fabricated.

Fitting Categories

Eight categories, one registration path.

Fittings registrations are done by categories, which can be found in Table 1 of CSA B51.

A

Pipe fittings, including couplings, tees, elbows, wyes, plugs, unions, pipe caps and reducers.

B

All flanges.

C

All line valves.

D

All types of expansion joints, flexible connections, and hose assemblies.

E

Strainers, filters, separators, and steam traps.

F

Measuring and indicating devices, including pressure gauges, level gauges, sight glasses, levels, and pressure transmitters.

G

Certified capacity-rated pressure relief devices acceptable as primary overpressure protection on boilers, pressure vessels and pressure piping, and fusible plugs.

H

Pressure-retaining components that do not fall into Categories A to G.

Notes

  1. 01These categories do not take into account size, material, end connections, ratings, schedules, and methods of fabrication.
  2. 02Category H can include:
    • Small pressure vessels registered and inspected as specified in Figure 1 a), 1 b), or 1 c). Such pressure vessels shall be designed and constructed in accordance with Clause 7, except that items under Figures 1 a) and 1 b) may be designed to Clause 8, provided the vessel does not require full radiography per the ASME Code, has no quick-actuating closure, is not in cyclic service, and is 4 NPS or smaller.
    • An assembly of components (including piping components), provided no component exceeds 152 mm (6 in) in diameter and the total volume does not exceed 42.5 L (1.5 ft³). Such an assembly counts as a single Category H fitting for registration.
    • Condenser and evaporator coils as defined in CSA B52, and air heater coils, provided no component exceeds 152 mm (6 in) in diameter and the design pressure does not exceed 4.14 MPa (600 psig).

Fitting Exemptions

Where registration isn't required.

  • Categories A, B, C exempt from registration provided they are designed to standards listed in Table 126.1 (B31.1), Table 326.1 (B31.3), Table 526.1 (B31.5) or Table 926.1 (B31.9).
  • Category G if marked with an ASME or NB stamp.

PE Design can help you register any type of fitting — from a common ASME standard to a custom product with no known standard.

Vessel or Fitting?

Three flow charts settle the question.

To determine if you have a vessel or a Category H fitting, most provinces follow the flow charts from CSA B51 for the intended service of your product. For TSSA (Ontario), see the note below the charts.

CSA B51 Figure 1 a) — registration and inspection flow chart for pressure vessels in liquid service with liquids not more hazardous than water
CSA B51 · Figure 1 a) — Liquids not more hazardous than water

TSSA (Ontario)

Ontario's code adoption document states — Section 1.4:

“Items less than 6″ in internal diameter or less than 1.5 cubic feet in internal volume are classified as Category “H” fittings, not pressure vessels.”

Always a Fitting

The charts above only apply to Category H. Categories A to G are always considered fittings — for example, a valve or flange is always a fitting, even if the volume and size from the charts would indicate it is a vessel.
