CRN stands for Canadian Registration Number, and a lot can be learned from the registration number itself if you break it down.

The Breakdown...

Using a simple vessel CRN of:

A4321.215

A – Designator from the initial province of registration
4321 – CRN number designated by the initial province of registration
.2 – First number after the decimal is the initial province of registration Alberta in this example
15 –  Additional provinces of registration, BC and Ontario in this example

A typical Canada wide registration would be:

A4321.2C
C   – the ‘C’ after the initial province of registration means its registered Canada-wide.

A4321.2C = A4321.2134567890YTN
Where the numbers after the decimal are:

1 – British Columbia
2 – Alberta
3 – Saskatchewan
4 – Manitoba
5 – Ontario
6 – Quebec

7 – New Brunswick
8 – Nova Scotia
9 – Prince Edward Island
0 – Newfoundland & Labrador
Y – Yukon Territory
T – Northwest Territories

N – Nunavut

From the flow charts above you can see that vessels require an inspection by an authorized inspector, where a fitting is inspected internally by the manufacture’s QC program. This allows the manufacturer to build as many as they want without having to repeatedly arrange for the authorized inspector to come by and approve everything.

Fitting registrations must be renewed every 10 years.  All calculations, drawings and supporting documents must be resubmitted to the jurisdictions.  A vessels registration never expires, but the design must be verified to the current Code edition when fabricated.
